I’m cross posting this review for all 7 books in the series as I read them back-to-back. Detective Chief Inspector Ryan is the star of this series, although there are several fantastic supporting characters as well.The first book introduces you to the main characters, their flaws and strengths, as well as the Northumbrian landscape. This author clearly knows the territory in which her books take place and does a beautiful job of describing each location, so much so, that I’ve put the region on my “must visit” list.Each book is a fast paced journey to find the criminal and bring him or her to justice. They’re sprinkled with the emotional details, trials and tribulations of the characters’ lives, which makes each of them real and believable. I had a very difficult time putting each and every one of these books down and now that I’ve finished the last one, I’m desperate for the next…Typically I receive books for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, however this is a verified purchase. I’ve become hooked on these DCI Ryan books. Each is an excellent yarn with many twists & turns. Never easy to figure out “who done it” before the big reveal at the end. A quick, entertaining read with characters who are easy to like, flaws & all. The Circle (villains) are uber creepy and hit a bit close to home in the current global atmosphere. These are my current “escapist” books of choice; I’m on the 4th and undoubtedly will keep rolling with Max Ryan. These stories would make for good episodic TV.

I just couldn't put this book down. DCI Ryan and his team take us for a rollercoaster of a ride. JL Ross's characters follow an amazing storyline from the first book "Holy Island" to "Sycamore Gap" and finally to "Heavenfield". This book is full of description and suspense with an exciting ending. As a mystery reader and lover I can only beg for more.

In Holy Island I was irritated by the dragging in of occult practices but Heavenfield brought that motivation back to human greed and lust for power which made it more realistic. It is still of course wildly unbelievable but in a more enjoyable way. Don't I wish we could all have the superhuman recovery powers of DCI Ryan!I enjoy good British police procedural novels set in specific areas of which the writers have local knowledge and the LJ Ross books have added Northumberland to Oxfordshire, the fen country and the west country.

I'm not sure what the difference would be for books in terms of good and excellent so I will call this and excellent good read. All the suspense and mystery you can want with a smattering of romance thrown in. All the elements of a hero story with lots of danger and mystery overcome in heroic fashion. Sound smarmy then you need to read one of her books. DCI Ryan is a smooth character with lots of material to work with.

Absolutely enjoyable series of police procedurals but less stuffy than most. Love the romance between CSI Ryan and the beautiful Professor with the shapely legs and would like to see more of their relationship. Supporting detectives are strong, supportive and loyal. The very high ranking police officer is a bit unbelievable for me as a former police constable. Nevertheless, this is fiction and very enjoyable. The atmosphere created by the author is most engaging. Cannot wait for book #4 and have already pre-ordered.

I have read the first three books in this series and obviously liked them! The characters are well-developed; the plot is fast-paced and has some twists; and there are a couple of good back stories. These were the first books I had read by this author, and I already have the other three in line to read next.

A pleasure to read good literature. This series made me a little crazy due to the complex nature of the crimes and many players. Compelled to read to find out the answers. Love Ryan, Anna Phillips MacKenzie and Lowerson. Great characters
