Votes for Women!: American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot

From School Library Journal

Gr 6–10—The intense drama of the 72-year battle for women's suffrage springs vividly to life from the pages of this compulsively readable account. Expertly balancing the human interest focus on individual suffragists with critical contextual information, Conkling gives readers an overview of the movement in all its complexity from the origins of the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Influential leaders such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Victoria Claflin Woodhull, and Alice Paul are introduced as well-rounded human beings who each wrestled in their own ways with aligning their desire for women's suffrage with questions of morality and political strategy over abolition, temperance, and pacifism, among other issues. Covering a time period that included the Civil and First World Wars, not to mention a multitude of shifting alliances among suffragists themselves, could easily become dense or confusing; however, Conkling's character sketches and lucid explanations make the narrative easy to follow. She highlights the dual fight of racism and sexism that Black women faced and addresses the racism of white suffragists. Well-chosen black-and-white photographs enhance the text. A time line, annotated list of primary sources, bibliography, and index make this useful for research and reports, but the quality of the writing renders it appealing for leisure reading as well. VERDICT Timely and relevant, this is an essential purchase for all collections serving middle and high school students.—Laura Simeon, Open Window School, Bellevue, WA

This is a fascinating account of the huge long struggle women went through to get the right to vote, and makes for a compelling, easy read --- I learned a great deal that I did not know about this important topic, and I strongly recommend it!

Amazing book, details the events leading to women’s right to vote. Introduces keys people, integrates the two movements of the time well, both abolition & suffrage. Highly recommend for all to read!!

On 18 August 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, meaning that the enfranchisement of all American women became law.The scene in the Tennessee House of Representatives had been exceptionally tense as everything ultimately turned on the vote of twenty-four-year-old Harry T. Burn who had been expected to vote against ratification but who was swayed at the eleventh hour by a message from his mother telling him, "Don't forget to be a good boy" and "vote for suffrage."This is the dramatic story with which Winifred Conkling’s ‘Votes for Women!’ opens, although it is only 250 or so pages after her Preface that she finally reveals the exhortatory contents of Mrs ‘Febb’ Burns’s epistle to her son.Between these two points Conkling travels back to 1826 (a pivotal moment in Elizabeth Cady’s life when her brother Eleazar, her father’s last male heir, died) and then provides a lively and engaging narrative of the battle to achieve votes for women, centring on the many remarkable women involved in that campaign including Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Carrie Chapman Catt, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Victoria Woodhull, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Burns and Alice Paul. The otherwise very full bibliography does not mention Johanna Neuman’s ‘Gilded Suffragists’ (which I have reviewed elsewhere on Amazon), nor is there any mention of Neuman’s thesis in the text. This is, however, not too grave an omission as Conkling nevertheless provides a nuanced and inspirational story adorned with extracts from key primary sources a timeline and many illustrations, which should appeal to young readers of both sexes.

Votes for Women! American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot (2018) by Winifred Conkling is engaging narrative non-fiction at its best. This book offers a nuanced history of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States from the Seneca Falls convention through to the momentous vote that ratified the nineteenth amendment with the moments leading up to the vote and its aftermath framing the book as prologue and epilogue. Most of the book is follows Elizabeth Cady Stanton from her birth through to the moment that she realized women having the right to vote was key to equal rights and her subsequent dedication to the suffrage movement. Letters and ephemera highlight Stanton's abiding friendship with Susan B. Anthony and other women within the suffrage and prohibition movements--two groups that often overlapped. They also underscore some of the inner conflicts that are not often covered in broad strokes about this moment in history. The last few chapters of the book shift the focus to Alice Paul and Lucy Burns with their more militant approach to the fight for women's suffrage including their numerous arrests, hunger strikes, forced feedings, and nonviolent protest.Votes for Women! is frank in a way that many history books are not. Conkling covers some of the uglier moments of the suffrage movement thoughtfully, including the ways in which the suffrage movement divided when faced with choosing between votes for women or votes for African American men. No one within the movement was perfect and the fight for suffrage as a whole often disregarded women of color as well as the poor and working class--something that Conkling writes about thoughtfully and without apology. The end of the book includes extensive end notes, timelines, resources, and more.Votes for Women! is a thorough and comprehensive history with short chapters, engaging narrative and even suspense after all these years. Timely and empowering, Votes for Women! is a vital read in this current political climate. Highly recommended.
