So you know what it feels like when a book grabs you on the first page? Or after the first paragraph? Or even after the first sentence? Yeah, that's this book. This is the story of Jamie Pyke, who was conceived after the master of a Virginia plantation raped one of his black slaves. But Jamie looks white and passes as white. His story begins in the predecessor to this book, "The Kitchen House," where he is a minor character and small boy. Now it is 1830. He is grown and living in Philadelphia, having escaped Virginia at age 13 for committing a horrific crime on the plantation. He creates a wonderful life for himself in Philadelphia, but all of that is threatened when his racial secret is exposed to a few influential people. Just as this happens, he learns that Pan, a special child in his life, was captured on the docks of Philadelphia and sent south to be sold into slavery. And so Jamie faces his greatest terror and returns to the South to find and rescue Pan--where he could very well be captured and hung for the crime he committed 20 years ago.Kathleen Grissom has written an enthralling story about the transforming power of love, the extraordinary bravery of some and the inhumane barbarism of others. It will make you laugh, and it will make you cry. Most of all, it will make you think as it brings to life through these brilliantly conceived characters this ugly piece of our American history.I just hope there is a third book in this series that is not really a series.

The sequel to the beloved book The Kitchen House.. Oh how I wanted to love it just as much! And it was so well written and the characters were extremely well developed. However, in my opinion, Jamie Pyke Burton - the main character, (who was a minor character in the Kitchen House) was a weak, unlikeable man who constantly chose to leave others behind because he feared for himself. Oher characters however, such as Pan, the sweet, smart, endearing and inquisitive boy whose life everyone tried to save and Robert, the Butler whose amazing heart, strength of character, belief in right and wrong are the two individuals who truly gave this book soul.Sukey, a former house slave in the Kitchen House also appears in Glory Over Everything and while her character is just as beloved and her voice is still heard, I felt that an opportunity was missed in the way she was brought into the storyline with people from her past and that could have been told so gloriously, this for me, was a major disappointment. I read those chapters several times over thinking I must have missed something that in the end just wasn't there.Overall, Glory Over Everything was beautifully written, and the storyline drew me in immediately. I found it to be a worthy sequel to one of the best books I've bee read.

This is the best book I have read in a while and I'm in a book club. It had me from the beginning. Jamie has run away from his home in Tall Oaks after killing his father, the slave owner and has now settled in the Philadelphia area. He is passing a white and living comfortable thanks to a well to do family that takes him in. He falls in love with a married woman, who become pregnant with his child. He has not told her about his past.He is asked by a formerly slave to return near his home to rescue his young son, who has been taken back into slavery. And then the story begins and all of what happens to him along his journeyBeautifully written, giving lots of details, background, and history on all the characters. In many of the scenes, I thought I was there running with him. It also details the emotionally toll all of his heavy decisions had on very other characters. It leaves us at the end thinking about what's next.My book club read Kathleen Grisson's first novel The Kitchen House and loved it but Glory Over Everything was well written and well researched. The characters are well developed and each one had their own back story.

Very good page -turner! I like the way author has various people telling the story, in different chapters. She uses the same method in her first book, *The Kitchen House*, which is a prequel for this one... I would recommend reading that one first, as some of the characters carry over the story. There are more characters with a more involved plot in the first novel; but this one was probably more suspenseful and faster- moving. I'd like to see yet a third novel, about how the little girls grow up, plus, what happens to E. and to A.S. (female characters chiefly in the last few chapters), but that's probably asking a lot... I am glad the dual male protagonist (s) found peace, yet, the stories of the above female characters bear telling, too.I also appreciated the amount of historical and geographical research that the author did.
