Words are powerful but the stories they make are even more so. We might not remember details of things we read, but we do remember the stories. In this book, David Moskowitz, lays out a view of wolves from the point of view of a tracker. A tracker, whether they like it or not, is a truth seeker. It will not do to see something and decide what it is and what it means without hard evidence to support your conclusions. Many times it might take a tracker a few hours, or weeks, or even years to learn what something they saw means. An open mind is a tool a tracker learns. Therefore, the stories in this book are ones of observation in the purest form. The author looks at the wolf in the Pacific Northwest without being influenced by what other people believe. His field experiences were uncolored and true. I thought I knew a few things about wolves since I have observed them in Yellowstone and tracked them in other places. In this book I learned quite a bit more, and even more about the habitat that some of us call home in the Pacific Northwest. Whenever you learn something new, or shape and hone an idea you had that is not quite right, you are alive and growing. This book is worth reading just for that. I gave it a five star because it is a well researched, well written and, therefore, quite an enjoyable book.

I really enjoyed this book. Moskowitz details the evolution and biology of wolves, including their diet, behavior, and relationship with humans, in the context of wolf packs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Canada. I have a newfound appreciation for the challenges in the US regarding human-wildlife conflict, particularly the persecution of wolves throughout the Pacific Northwest. Moskowitz combines a detailed history of the wolf with his personal experiences of firsthand encounters in the wild as well as with people living in wolf territory. The photography included of the landscapes and animals is also beautiful.

David does a great way of explaining the wolves of the Americas in great detail. He starts off with the landscape of where wolves live then gets to the over all appearance, build, and structure of the animal, what they eat and so on. This is a very well field researched book and you can tell by reading it he has been in the field for many years and has first hand experience with these magnificent animals :) !! I wish I could give this book more stars than 5 + . This is a must read if you want to learn about the recent wolf come back as well has the history of the wolves in the US. This is a great book for someone new to wolves and wants to learn everything they can about, this is the book for you !!

The pix are great. This is a story about an animal that helped to humanize humanity. Look carefully at dogs- you see neotenized wolves. They don't deserve the treatment they get. This is a book only a tracker could have written, I think. It's written to thank wolves for humanizing humanity, by humanizing wolves- or at least de-demonizing them. Tracking, in its indigenous form, is a spiritual discipline. Entering the Mind of the Tracker: Native Practices for Developing Intuitive Consciousness and Discovering Hidden Nature,Tracking and the Art of Seeing: How to Read Animal Tracks and Sign,Animal Tracking Basics, and other books point this out. It forces one to see things just as they are, without preconceptions and other filters. This book does some of that, it offers new and useful ways of looking at things. Well done.

David Moskowitz has beautifully painted a portrait of one of the most intriguing and misunderstood animals in North America. He profiles the wolf from multiple angles and attempts to make sense of our complicated relationship with this animal. The photography that accompanies the writing is well done and adds to the experience of reading this book.

I am a wildlife management graduate and this book appealed to everything that I like!! Written with enough scientific know-how and insight that it made me think, however not so much that I felt like I was reading a textbook! The mans writing is superb and you are clearly shown his love for these great animals and their habitat. One of those books that you wish was a fiction tale so there was hope of more books in the series!

I am in the middle of this book and have really enjoy it, but would not be for those who want a quick easy read. This is a subject I have studied for some time and have learn from this book.

Being a resident of the PNW it is nice to have a book that is related to "our" wolves. The book was written in a way that made it more of a story rather than a dense textbook, but there was still a wealth of information to gain. The photography was spectacular and the personal insight from his in the field experience was well appreciated.I unknowingly owned the Wildlife of the Pacific Northwest Tracking/Identifying guide before purchasing this book and between the two I am eagerly awaiting more works from David Moskowitz.
